Seoul based Kia Motors has been promoting their products quite aggressively in the North American market. From sedans and hatchbacks, they have now expanded to SUVs and minivans as well. But, their piece resistance is undoubtedly the venerable ‘Kia Sportage’ that has a made a name for itself all over the world.
The Sportage does not have a reputation of being the most reliable SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle). Its indeed for earlier models were plagued with both reliability and durability issues. However, the company ironed out their faults. Still, the 2017 Kia Sportage has a tough time competing against better-known brands manufactured by both American as well as Japanese companies. Off-roaders such as the Land Cruiser and the Grand Cherokee have a reputation for ruggedness and reliability that few can match and hardly hope to beat easily. But then they do charge premium prices, while the Sportage is comparatively less expensive.
It is a classic example of a ‘crossover SUV’. Basically, crossover utility vehicle (CUV), is a class of automobile that has primarily being built on a car platform. But at the same time, it manages to mate the salient points of a sport utility vehicle (SUV) with the features of a luxury sedan or even a hatchback. Physically, they resemble station wagons more than outright jeeps in many cases. However, the Sportage is something of any exception to this rule. It resembles much bigger vehicles such as the Grand Cherokee or the Mitsubishi Pajero more than a station wagon.
2017 Kia Sportage – Design:
The front seats of the 2017 Kia Sportage are every bit as roomy as compared to its other counterparts. Apart from being comfortable, the driver is perched in a driving position that offers excellent visibility via the windscreen. As for the rear portion of the cabin, the leg room, and head space is markedly higher than most compact SUVs. Being seated at the back of the Kia Sportage 2017 makes one feel as if he is a much bigger vehicle.
Low Cargo Space:
However, increasing the leg as well as headroom in the back seat of such a compact SUV meant the sacrifice of the cargo and luggage compartment. In fact, the luggage space is only slightly roomier than a hatchback vehicle.
However, in order to compensate for this drawback, Kia installed a floor panel usable like the rear trunk of a sedan and additional cargo may be stored inside. Alternatively, the panel may be removed altogether so as to drastically increase cargo space in the rear of the Kia Sportage 2017.
The new Kia Sportage 2017 comes equipped with an auto lift gate. This feature has the capability of sensing your presence and the opening of its own accord when a person is standing close to it.
The information/entertainment system has an auxiliary set of controls that are located on the steering wheel. This eliminates the risk of taking the hand off the wheel while driving. The whole system is equipped with a state of the art speaker system and has been heavily upgraded to offer exceptional entertainment on-the-go. It is available in 5 inches, 7 or even an 8-inch screen as par trim levels and has knobs rather than hard to find buttons to activate its many features.
Moreover, the system’s touch screen is angled towards the driver so that accessing it is markedly easier. The Kia Sportage 2017 is equipped with a temperature and climate control option for the cabin. The, by now ubiquitous, blind spot monitoring system is standard in all trims. It also comes equipped with both rear and side parking sensors that together with its small size make parking even in cramped spaces a relatively easy preposition. The 2017 Kia Sportage also has a pre-collision braking system, which is really fantastic feature.
Better overall sound insulation:
The 2017 Kia Sportage SUV has excellent insulation for its cabin and offers a near noise less driving experience so that the occupants of its cabin can enjoy their music or movie.
Compared to other low cost SUV options available in the market, the 2017 Kia Sportage has quite a stylish and futuristic look especially when compared to its low price. The interior design of the new model has also streamlined for a sleeker and sophisticated look. All these factors combined make Sportage a tough contender even for the pricier SUVs.
Off Road Ability:
The Kia Sportage 2017 is primarily a front wheel drive with an AWD upgrade being available on all three trims I.e. LX, SX and SX Turbo.
2017 Kia Sportage – Engine Specs:
The 2017 Kia Sportage LX and SX versions have a 181 hp, 2.4-liter (2400cc) four-cylinder gasoline engine. The SX Turbo version is powered by turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. This engine has output of 240 hp.
For a 2400 cc engine it gives a relatively mediocre mileage i.e. 23/30 city/highway. The turbocharged Sportage (SX Turbo) has even worse economy i.e. 21 for city and 26 for highway.
All thee trims are available with a 6-speed automatic transmission that shifts gears effortlessly.
2017 Kia Sportage – Price:
The three trims available start from the basic model LX starting around $23.880. The new 2017 Kia Sportage EX will have a price tag of $ 33,340. The price goes all the way up to $33,390 for the turbo-charged sunroof and voice commanded equipped SX Turbo. The 2017 Kia Sportage can’t really hope to compare with other more powerful and established SUVs such as GMC Terrain or Ford Edge. But, its low cost and excellent features do make it an attractive preposition for a prospective buyer looking for an inexpensive yet well-equipped crossover SUV.
