The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee is almost synonymous with the American outback and has been able to gather a justifiably great reputation for reliability and durability while talking the toughest terrain in its stride.
The Grand Cherokee was initially launched in 1993 under the ‘Jeep” brand of FCA US LLC or Fiat Chrysler or just plain Chrysler as it is widely known today. The term Jeep is known the world over for extremely tough off-roaders. In fact, so common has this usage become that almost all off road capable vehicles are colloquially referred to as “Jeep”. This is because the first 4×4 capable Jeeps that gained widespread popularity were created in the USA during the second world war to take on the harsh terrains of Europe and North Africa. To this day, the ‘Jeep’ legend endures as an attribute to some of the toughest vehicles ever built. In fact, the Jeep’s oft-repeated slogan is “I live. I ride. I am Jeep”
Since its introduction in the early 90s. The Grand Cherokee has gone through various upgrades and is now currently in its fourth generation. The Gen IV vehicles are referred to as WK2 and offer many significant upgrades over their older counterparts.
The vehicle is currently available at 30 trim levels with eight of them being 4×4 while the remaining twenty-two being full on 4×4 capable vehicles.
2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee – Engine Options:
The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a range of engine options available designed for on-road cruising all the way to heavy-duty outdoor work.
The 3.6-liter (3600 cc) V6 gasoline fueled Pentastar powerhouse has the potential of churning out 295 hp. Most rear-wheel drive Cherokees with the V6 return an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.
This is because highway driving is relatively smooth without frequent braking. In this aspect, Jeep is not that much different from its counterparts in the mid-sized SUV (sports utility vehicle) segment. While this engine is more than capable of delivering enough power for almost all on road (and some off road) situations.
However, should that power be not considered enough by a discerning driver. 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee is also available with an eco diesel powerhouse installed in its engine bay? Most of its ‘limited trim’ versions have been equipped with a 3.0-liter (3000 cc) V6 diesel engine. The V6 diesel is known for generating a lot of torque and can go up till 240 hp. It is also quite fueled efficient for a diesel-fueled engine and easily managed 22 mpg in city driving and 30 mpg or so while driving on the highway.
The third engine that might soon be available is an extremely powerful 5700 cc ( 5.7-liter) V8 gasoline engine that would be more than sufficient for the most demanding of applications whether it is the ‘need for speed’ or ultra hard off-roading in the outback, thanks to its ability to produce 360 hp.
However, the fuel economy of this engine (as would be expected from such a powerful V8) drops all the way down to 14 mpg for inner city and 22 mpg on the highway. But what it loses in an economy, it more than makes up with raw brute force. Meanwhile, there are also plans afoot for an SRT® 6.4-Liter (6400 cc) HEMI® V8 Engine. However, not much is known about this monster as of yet. However, it is widely reckoned that it would sacrifice fuel economy for additional power. It is said that it would generate 475 hp and 470 pound-feet of torque. The new Jeep Grand Cherokee 207 has the potential to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds with an overall top speed of 160 mph.
2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee – Transmission:
All available brand new Grand Cherokees models of 2016 and 2017 are equipped with an 8-speed automatic paddle transmissions. The low gear ratios aid considerably in maximizing fuel economy without giving up too much of power and torque. Most of the limited edition versions are also equipped with a ‘transmission heating device’. That is ideal for cold weather conditions since the transmission heater protects and prolongs the life of the vehicle’s tranny.
2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee – Design:
Upcoming 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee is equipped with an electronic steering wheel that is responsive to the lightest touch. Moreover, a lot of controls are embedded in it so that the driver would not have to move his hand away from the wheel while driving, to be able to operate any number of features in the vehicle thus ensuring safety at all times. The wheel also includes three selectable drive modes (comfort, normal and sport) for a highly customized driving experience.
2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee – Infotainment System:
The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee boasts of a large multi-screen TFT fully controllable touch screen. That can handle blue tooth, aux, CD/DVD and even blue rays and radio with equal aplomb. It is also equipped with a USB port as well. The trim options range from 5.0 size screen with 6 speakers all the way up to a state of the art 8.5 multi-screen option with a whopping 18 high power speaker system with its own integrated amplifier. The heating and air conditioning systems on all the trims have been upgraded for the coming models.
The various trim levels offer a veritable plethora of colors and materials to choose from. However, there are three core options. I.e. cloth, ventilated leather and full leather. The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee color options range from beige all the way to full black.
The basic trim levels are not 4×4 capable but the Limited and higher editions are equipped with a computer controlled 4×4 powertrain with pre-programmed integrated options for a range of off-road capabilities including rain, sand, snow and gradient.
